Rep. Michael Honda (D-Calif) finds the Cuban embargo to be imprudent, which, in the end, means the total embargo of Cuban goods – including a nice smoke – could soon fall.
Honda notes that Cuba is cleaving to Latin America as it privatizes and changes. The result, he writes, are distressing:
We will see more of this. The Cubans are seeking suitors. Like the Bank of the South, Latin America’s attempt to wean countries off U.S. institutions like the World Bank, the longer we keep Cuba at arm’s length, the more likely Brazil and others will take our place.
Falling food imports by Cuba as well as reduced banking interaction make keeping this strange little country at bay a risk that may not be worth the effort anymore. Castro’s power is waning and the politics of external states like Cuba will suffocate and change forever with the embrace of core countries.
