Golf pro Jim Thorpe won’t be able to attend this dinner, but maybe you can shell out $200 to give him a hand. After a two-year legal battle with the IRS, Thorpe is behind bars, and he and his wife could lose their house. So, Banker Jeff Ramsey wants you to kick in when the hat is passed around.

In this case, the hat is a dinner and auction on June 21, 2010 at Foxwoods Resort Casino. The next day, there’s going to be a ProAm golf tournament on the South Course. The golf festivities will set you back another $1,500 … but it’s for a good cause, right?

Okay, so this isn’t the noblest of charity endeavors, but at least you’ll get to meet Dick Butkis and Jim Rice … if you’re into that kind of thing.

What’s the lesson in all this?

It’s not just cigar taxes that can have you reaching into your pocket … it’s other people’s taxes, too.

Jim is a great guy and has done a lot (more than most other notable celebrities) to help those in need and give of his time to charitable endeavors. I believe this is the case of one friend helping another friend in his time of need. We should all be so lucky to have a friend like that.
