In London a photograph (a re-enactment appears here) has surfaced which revealed that just hours after England’s World Cup loss Fabio Capello’s men had celebrated with beers and cigars. The photograph taken by Ledley King, and circulated among pals shows how the players got over their World Cup woes in their South African hotel. The picture showed winger Aaron Lennon puffing on a Cuban cigar. Others surrounded by beer bottles, wine and champagne.
A fan, who leaked the picture after being shocked and disappointed by the team’s attitude made several statements. The fan stated “At the least after that God-awful performance we expected the team to be embarrassed and reflect on how they let us all down, but instead, just hours after the match, they’re in the bar with a cigar and beers.” He went on to say “It’s enough to make you sick. They have no pride.”
England’s long history of football pride has become a trademark of not just the team but their fans as a whole. Passion and persistence is the least of what you would expect from these athletes. Their actions so close after being knocked out are sure to not go over well with any of their fans and will not be quickly forgotten.
