Well, it wasn’t just the cigars. Some private jets were part of the problem, too. Joy rides and great sticks have led to the resignation of two French ministers who were apparently living the good life while the public had to deal with budget cuts.

Alain Joyandet, the Development Minster, and Christian Blanc, a junior minister, resigned on Sunday, after having held their offices since March 2008.

According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald:

Mr Joyandet, 56, was criticised for spending €116,500 ($173,000) to hire a jet to take him to Martinique for a meeting on the Haitian earthquake. Mr Blanc, 68, who was responsible for overseeing development of a region of Greater Paris, came under fire last month for spending €12,000 of taxpayers’ money on Cuban cigars.

That’s a lot of cash to drop on cigars! Well, at least these guys enjoyed themselves on the way out.
