Hey, New Yorkers: do you like being able to light up a cigar in the city’s parks? I do. I’ll smoke one while hanging out in Central Park, and I used to have (more than) one while writing in Madison Square Park. The prospect of an outdoor smoking ban is back, according to the latest Cigar Rights of America Action Alert, and it would affect more than 1,700 parks and 14 miles of beaches.
Think you’re powerless to make a change? You’re wrong. The CRA writes:
Last November, Michael Bloomberg won a third term as Mayor of New York by a margin of 50,342 votes, out of 1.1 million ballots cast. This, after he dropped $80 million on his campaign, and garnering just eight more votes per precinct than his opponent, NYC Controller William Thompson, in each of the city’s 6,110 polling sites. Eight votes per precinct, and there would have been no more Bloomberg. That’s why CRA has Smoke the Vote 2010.
Make a difference: contact the New York City Council, and take a step to protect your rights.
