Back story: The Excalibur line debuted as the fuller bodied blend of Hoyo de Monterrey. The top 10 percent of the tobacco crop grown in Nicaragua and Honduras and delivered to Villizon is reserved for the Excalibur line. The unique blend of tobaccos gives this cigar a very hearty aroma and a dry and spicy finish. While production has moved from Cuba, the traditional cultivation and natural fermentation process originally utilized by Hoyo de Monterrey has not changed. These cigars have a very classic and traditional Cuban allure to them that can be detected in every cigar.
Construction: I have smoked around 5-8 of these and everyone has been packed well with no soft spots and an immaculate buttery smooth dark chocolaty color oily wrappers. The sleek limited edition numbered band comes off flawlessly and effortlessly every time.
Pre-light: The wrapper gave off a caramel chocolate and cedar smell with the foot smelling very woody and on the pre-draw I picked up some more chocolate.
Burn: Each one burned clean and sharp billowing sweet smelling white smoke that quickly fills the room while sporting tight white ash. The draw was fantastic on this smoke. I chose to punch it and glad I did being that it expelled so much smoke.
Tasting notes: The first puffs taste like a sweet leather and chocolate ice cream. First third of the way through the cigar, the espresso flavor opens up to a chocolate essence. Almost like a sundae because there’s plenty of nutty flavor as well. It’s very light and very soft on the palate, but still leaves plenty of flavors in your mouth. From the half way point to the last third, it’s the same. Lots more chocolate, but by the end of the second third there is more of a roasted undertone and a lot more leather, less sweet and more richer leather. Some pepper every once in a while, but nothing to distracting. It’s a very soft pepper that only remains on the aftertaste. By the end of the cigar, you feel as though you have had desert!
Overall: I’ve come to enjoy these cigars both in the morning with coffee and in the evening with coffee after a meal. They are truly fantastic with an outstanding price point to match. If you’re a fan of maduro cigars like I am I think you will enjoy this cigar very much. For the mild smokers who are looking for a sweet and not so spicy maduro, this ones for you. It’s a really good cigar with a solid consistent flavor profile.
