Exciting news for cigar smokers in New York City. Where an age-old institution, Guss’ Pickles, used to be, a boutique cigar shop Maraya Cigars will take its place. Maraya is tentatively scheduled to open on the the third annual NYC Apple Day on September 26.

Here’s a blurb from their website:

Our aim is to preserve the centuries-old tradition and craft of cigar-making, an authentic livelihood, deserving a continued place in the world. We want to educate and inform those who continue to enjoy fine cigars made in countries around the world.

“Maraya promotes the enjoyment of cigar smoking as an acceptable pleasure, rather than accepting being dogged in a downward spiral by negative social stigma. We want to enjoy cigars when and where we please, at appropriate times and in appropriate places without being forced into smoking rooms.

We celebrate the fine craft of cigar-making as an art form and artisanal form of pleasure today and for many generations to come. We encourage the fight for freedom to continue making great cigars, and freedoms to pursue our natural instincts of pleasure.”

I know where and what I’ll be doing that day: Smoking a fine Dominican cigar from Maraya’s.

Being a 60 year old NYC Cigar Smoker. I am always pleased to see another Cigar Store. There is a certain charm in going in, talking with the person rolling the cigar. Then sitting back & enjoying your cigar.
Hopefully they will have a smoking lounge.
What I see hopefully as a glimmer of hopeThey are opening in spite of the Nanny Bloomberg Administration.
The hearings on Smoking in Public NYC parks & Beaches is set for Sept 23,2010 The hearings are to be held at 250 Broadway NYC. Hopefully the owners of Maraya Cigars will be there with their supporters.
